Claiming for yourself

Your donation tax credits are also available for you to claim yourselves at absolutely no cost.

Luckily, Inland Revenue has a smooth, easy process to allow you to go online and submit your donation tax receipts. Simply log in to your MyIR account and upload the donation tax receipts at any time in the year, and when it comes time to assess your tax position, Inland Revenue will take them into account and pay your eligible donation tax credits to you directly.

What is a donation tax credit?

If you’re a NZ taxpayer, you can claim 33.33 cents for every dollar that you donate to charities or schools – this 33.33 cents is your donation tax credit. Anyone who is an individual (i.e. not a trust, partnership or company) may be eligible. This donation tax credit is what becomes your TaxGift!

What does becoming a TaxGifter mean?

When you become a TaxGifter for an organisation, we’ll work with Inland Revenue to claim the donation tax credit to that organisation and pass it back to them as a further gift in your name. Each gift has more impact! This does not affect any other tax agents that you might have appointed for other reasons (for example, if you have an accountant that does your income tax returns).

I’ve changed my mind – what do I do?

You can terminate your TaxGift appointment at any time simply by emailing us at admin@taxgift.co.nz.

Do I have to pay to use TaxGift?

TaxGift is absolutely free from a donor perspective: it’s easy to TaxGift!

Organisations pay us a small fee (our standard fee is 10% +GST) for our service of integrating with Inland Revenue and claiming the donation tax credit – but only once they’ve received your further gift.
